Sui Zhen Nov 08 Poster

Sui Zhen is also playing at Peats Ridge Festival 2008-09 with full band! The set time is 12.30pm to 1.15pm on Tuesday 30 December 2008. Don't miss out!

Peats Ridge 2008

Sui Zhen is a young singer / songwriter / composer who has been performing both solo and with her full live band since 2003, supporting the likes of Coco Rosie (USA), Kimya Dawson (USA), The Brunettes (NZ, SubPop), and Malcolm Middleton (of Arab Strap, USA).

Sui Zhen’s solo instrumentation relies solely on the melodies created by her voice and guitar. In band mode, Sui Zhen’s unique voice is accompanied by dreamy soundscapes with darker rockier moments juxtaposed against soft folk-pop instrumentation and harmonies.

Sui Zhen’s self-titled independent EP of sweet folktronic-pop was launched in late 2007 to glowing reviews and national airplay, and she is still very much a performer in demand. Playing gigs and writing new music for a collaboration with partner Jamie Lloyd entitled “Little Hat” is keeping her way busy, but a Sui Zhen album is still very much on the cards for 2009…

Band:
Joe Gould has played in Sui Zhen for a little over a year. He currently orchestrates the sound-scapey elements to the live act with electric guitar, Mallet Kat, and various samples. Joe is a multi instrumentalist, his main project being the lively gypsy-folk-metal inspired Crooked Fiddle Band , for which lends his hands at drums and percussion.

Preston Peachey started playing drums with the band mid 2007. Preston’s drumming expertise has developed and matured through the various rock and more recently, funk bands he has played in over the last decade. Preston’s ability to play minimally and his subtle energy enhances the driving force behind the songs. Preston also plays for Self | Is A Seed.

Claire Herbert
is one of Becky’s oldest friends from kindergarten. They began singing together in primary school and developed a strong vocal synergy. In the band, Claire’s emulates the harmonies as recorded on the EP and adds other inventions of her own.

Dave Keys is the newest member to the live band, replacing former bassist and brother to Becky, Dan Freeman. Dave is an old hand at the live Sydney scene, playing for over ten bands in the last decade including Sarah Blasko, Lazy Susan and Spurs for Jesus just to name a few. In Sui Zhen, Dave re-interprets the various bass sounds on the EP with both electric and double bass to compliment the stories and songs.

Reform APRA

Oct 17 2008 2:54 PM

Some interesting info for you, if your music is with APRA. ASCAP is the rights organization in the US. Their bill of rights state. -We have the right to license our works and control the ways in which they are used. -We have the right to choose when and where our creative works may be used for free. Contact APRA and ask them why these freedoms that are available to artists in the US are not available to artists in Australia. Do you want a real business of music that is able compete with the system in the US? Do you want your content to allways be priced at the same price as large bands like the red hot chilly pepars? Why do you have no choice? is the union of APRA positive for your music when every home has an internet connection and the internet is a copy machine? Did you write your songs to be heard or to get a royalty? Don't you need the right to make your work free when the publishers reject it? Why do US composers and songwriters demand these rights? Australian artists can join and transfer to ASCAP. You just have to send in a paper application form, rather than join online. My thoughts are that you would be able to do more with tunes, with these rights within your community than the ones you have with APRA. http://www. ascap. com/rights/
